Darc
Darc, the creator of this thing here. Guys, I am NOT in the mood for ridicule right now. Here's a novel idea... how about you try saying something encouraging for once. I'd like to think you could at least do that.
Shadow
Don't know who or what the original post was, but I LOVE your work, used to be a regular paid subscriber, bought the books.. Please don't let some idiot get you down, you've got people out here that love your stuff and have been following and supporting best we can. THANK YOU! :)
Darc
The original post was a little rude but probably funny - and innocent - to the poster. The follow-up post... yeah, we're not going to go there. Thank you for sticking with me. :)
Vixen
I fully understand Hunter's reaction. I think I'd be asking the same questions and a few more. Of course, he's had some exposure to magic so he can handle this better than I would. I'd probably be sitting there going "How-eh-uh-er-what the-eep-er-uh-" Darc, hope you feel better. If I could, I'd stand in front of you and beat some sense into whoever is giving you a hard time.
Darc
Me too. Or running the other direction screaming, "you all are INSANE!" Thanks Vixen. Sorry for not being much fun at the moment. *blush*
Vixen
Having read the rest of the comments and your replies I will add this: few people know how to critique rather than criticize and too many people are quick to criticize. I've been following you for a long time and have seen your art improve. No surprise because you work at it *nods firmly*.
Vixen
You do still need to develop a thicker skin and learn to look at the criticisms you get with a critical eye. Even the "best" in any field can make mistakes or be influenced by their own preferences when commenting on someone else's work in the same field. And, on a final note here, everyone IS insane. *grins wickedly*
Darc
Thanks. I'm trying to work on it. It's proving more difficult than expected. I know, sounds like an excuse. But I am trying. Hey, I'm not insane! *hides the 'certifiably crazy' document from Arkham Asylum behind her back*
Vixen
It is more difficult than expected. That's why it takes time to develop the thicker skin. And insanity is fun, sanity is highly overrated. *grins wickedly*
Darc
Do you know of any methods or resources I could use to help me learn how to develop a critical eye towards criticism? I'd appreciate it.
Lugnut
Heh. It's happening as we speak. It's called "seat time". The folks who can't do what you do, but are certain that if they could they'd do it better are typically a vocal bunch. Tell your story, your way, Darc. Draw it in your style. That's what we all come here for. You're doing a wonderful job. On the upside, the "criticism" means that people are emotionally invested in your work. That's a good thing, even if the side effects are sometimes unpleasant. Cheers!
Darc
So after a while you just build up a tolerance and understanding from exposures? Cool! I'll have to keep that in mind for the future. Thanks! :D
Red
Pretty much what's already been said. I'll add that, when dealing with stuff, think "Is this someone I know. More importantly, is this someone I respect when it comes to X, Y or Z." In this case drawing. Thanks to the anonymity of the Net, you're always going to get people who you really feel are in dire need of some percussive tuning with the flat side of a keyboard (or maybe that's just me, kehehehe) Ok, Red ramble over. Moar CN:H, I want to know what happens! =P
Darc
Hey Red! Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks. :D
Red
No probs. And hey, at least you're getting critique at all! My work rut isn't helped by being a non-entity unlike your good self =P
Vixen
Mostly it takes time and experience. As Red said, look at who said the comment as well as what they say. General statements can be ignored. Then examine the comment. Do you agree with it? Does it seem reasonable? Why is there a problem with whatever? I know my vision is off so I sometimes see things as distorted when they aren't.
Vixen
Basically, you learn to critique the criticism. :) Just remember that what is right for you might not be right for someone else and allow people to disagree with how you do your work. If they don't want to return that courtesy that's their problem. Don't let it be yours.
Kman
Dude, I am loving your comic and was totally stoked when you started updating on Friday's too. Don't let the detractors get you down.
Darc
Thank you. I'm working towards updating Wednesdays as well starting in January. It's just taking me a bit to get back into the grove between learning, comics, and commissions. :)
M. Peach
Don't know what happened, but "Ouch!" I totally sympathize with you. I've had my own dose of ridicule lately and know what that's like. I always think your comics are top notch, though I've never commented before. I'm sure that a lot of other people do to. You have an incredible amount of talent, and have put a lot of hard work into this. I for one appreciate it a lot. Seeing your updates makes my day.
Darc
Thanks! *blush* I seem to attract a lot of ridicule for my work. Just can't seem to do things just right for some. The strange thing is, I see others who make a lot of mistakes yet never seem to get detractors. I'm not sure if they're hiding them or what. *shrug*
Waelwulfan
I have to agree with M. Peach. I've been reading for a long time now, and I love this comic. From the artwork to the story, there is a lot of talent, attention, and love devoted to this comic. Please don't be discouraged and keep up the excellent work!
Darc
Thank you. I'm hoping the lessons I'm doing will help improve the comic, both in art and speed. I'm still trying to figure out how to work on improving the writing. *blush*
Sheherazahde
I've been reading for a long time but rarely even read the comments. This is a great story and wonderful art work.
Darc
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it. :)
NightWind
Not sure who ridiculed in what way, so: Ignore the people that cannot point out problems in a constructive way. As I recently bought the comic in dead tree format: Yes, I like the comic very much and am looking forward to the soon-to-come parts I do not know yet. Great story, nice art.
Darc
Someone took a slightly rude yet probably meant in a humorous way comment as an invitation to rip into my drawing abilities. We'll be getting to the new pages in about a month. :) Thanks for sticking with me!
Bryce
Darc, I want to appologize yes i did mean that in a funny way but it came out wrong I didn't mean to rip into your abilites. Hell you can draw i know i cant. But i hope you can forgive me for the comment i made.
Darc
Hey Bryce. You were fine. While I admit, I found the post a little rude, that was my issue and not your fault. Unfortunately, when I tried removing the post in reply to yours which was the problem, I accidentally took out your post as well. :( I'm sorry.
Bryce
no worries i totally understand but i will try to do better with my comments next time :)
=Tamar
I don't normally read the comments, I read the comic. It's well drawn and I know you aren't going to let it peter out into nothing (like so much fanfic does) because you have it entirely written already. I like that. It means that I can let myself be invested in the characters and story.
Darc
Thanks! I'm working on ways to keep the comic going while doing the extra work I need to do now to pay the bills. It's a big of a juggling act, but it'll all work out. :)
The_L
So. Moraine doesn't trust Max and is having him run an errand to regain that trust. Said mission is to recover a missing agent. IN THE LAND OF THE FEY. I foresee lots of Bad Things happening.
Darc
But of course. Bad Things are what make it fun! She has another reason for sending him in... but you're just going to have to wait and see. ;)
Azlan
I've been there, it's not fun place to visit and they don't even give you a t-shirt.
Darc
And half the rides are always broken down. Those cheap buggers!
Frank
Never EVER 'jump to it'. ALWAYS ask questions. He who jumps when someone says 'jump' is an idiot.
Ellie
...except when they're your boss. Then, I'm pretty sure it's a good idea.
Darc
Especially when Ash is involved. She's a little ornery at times. O.O;
Ellie
Eep! Look at that angry face. No kidding...
Darc
Max, an idiot? Say it isn't so! ;)
Matt
Okay, it isn't so! (Yeah, right. He _is_ an idiot...)
Darkk
Poor Max. He can never seem to have a good day.
Darc
I'm sure Mercy (his next door neighbor from Issue 9) would be willing to give him a good day. But the poor boy is just so damn shy. *shakes head*
warhawk
@ Frank: Never had a Drill Sgt. on your a$$ before, have ya? Darc: who ever is a$$ enough to criticize your work needs to be drop kicked into a meat grinder. Your work and story lines are pretty d@mned good, keep it up.
Darc
I've heard about them. So much yelling. Thanks. I'm working on improving things as we go. Hopefully the lessons and studies I've been doing will help get the wonkiness out of the figures a bit.
Krissi
Keep up the good work Darc. I love your work beoth on Hunter and the galleries on your page. Please don't stop drawing.
Darc
Thanks Krissi! *blush*
Jamming
I love your work and am anxiously awaiting more.
Darc
Thank you. I'm working on increasing the updates starting in January. I'm still figuring out how to juggle pages with commissions and lessons. :)
unidyne
The insolent boor who has upset you is undeserving of attention, or even comment. Don't let such crude people get under your skin, Darc. Your work is an inspiration!
Darc
Thanks. I try. Sometimes my brain doesn't want to cooperate. *blush*
Nynaeve
Never let the detractors...well...detract...from the fact that you've created something truly wonderful here appreciated by far far FAR more people. Loving your work, loving your world, loving all your characters. :) Keep it up!
Darc
Thanks for sticking with me. Sorry about all the hiccups lately.
Jon
wow I really love your work here been watching for about a year now and on the first night I came across the comic I spent just about a whole night catching up. I wanted to thank you for this beautiful story!
Darc
Thank you. I'm glad you've been enjoying the comic so far. I hope the upcoming story will be entertaining as well. :)
Jessi
Like everyone else, I have no idea what happened, though I can assume that someone decided to be obnoxious. I have rarely commented since the Supporter's section closed down because I'm afraid of saying something spoilery, but I'll chime in to say that I really do love this comic. I've enjoyed watching the artwork evolve, and the story just continues to get better and more intriguing. Don't let the trolls get you down, Darc.
Darc
Thanks Jessi! I'm sorry about having to shut the Supporters area down. I know waiting around for the Main side to catch up has been a drag. Thanks for sticking with me through all this!
Jessi
No apologies needed for that. You did what had to be done. I'd be lying if I said it hasn't kind of been fun reading through again and watching the comments while people speculate on things to come. I'd also be lying if I said I wasn't excited we're getting close to where the Supporter's area left off :D
Steve
I had a long post set up. I'll put it in the forum. Overall, I wanted to say good job - on the story, the art, and keeping everything interesting. Cheers.
Darc
Thanks! *blush* I apologize for the limits on the commenting system. We were getting some very long comments that were sparking arguments last year and cutting the word limit seemed better than requiring each comment to be monitored before showing up. Kind of a worse of the two evils thing.
Godel Fishbreath
I love this comic. I deeply regret the business model that has seemed to have failed. Knowing what the next section is has kept my interest down, and I will be very interested in the comic when it goes beyond the point where I have bought the comics. I also regret that the planed 70 or so issues will not likely exist, and that the story will not end in anything like a timely manner.
Darc
Thanks. While the Supporters area worked well for four years, when the Big Guys changed the comic playing field we didn't have the funds to keep up. I'd love to put out an issue a month like the big guys, but I don't have the staff and I have bills to pay. :(
Ladyfox7oaks
I can only say one thing. ... MAGNIFICENT!
Darc
Thank you! *hugs*
Charlie Foxtrot
It's part of the human condition: quick to deprecate - slow to praise. I'm as guilty as the next of it. However, I really can't find anything to disparage, I enjoy you're work so much. But, I'm certainly over-late in saying thanks and expressing my admiration for your artistry, scope, and depth of vision. Please except my apologies and heartfelt thanks for your work.
Darc
Thank you. Sorry for being a stick in the mud lately. I'm hoping the lessons and studies I've been working on will help make the comic more enjoyable. Thanks again!
HEX the Dark
Some people just want to see the world burn... However, "No one cares for an unhappy Darc" is not true: We care!
Darc
How else are they going to make s'mores? In the microwave? That's just barbaric! ;) Thanks for putting up with me, Hex. I really appreciate it. *hugs*
Mariel of Redwall
So .... um .... this seems an awkward time to comment... considering the thread above, but I just read through the entire archives today, and am absolutely in love with this story. I love the characters, the story, all the unanswered questions, the humor woven throughout .... the art -- amazing. It taps into a place dear to my heart from childhood called Redwall .... thus my posting name :D.
Mariel of Redwall
And I just wanted to say thank you. I appreciate the work that goes into each page that you offer for free to the thankless wilderness of the internets.
Darc
YES! Redwall! So many happy memories. :D Sorry about the current thread here. It's normally not like this. *blush* Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the comic so far. Sorry again about all this chaos.
Joshofspam
I like to think the stories you draw have been rather interesting to follow and the world being intriguing in itself. You make great stories Darc
Darc
Thanks Josh. Here's hoping the upcoming issues are just as much fun. :D
Randompersonality
One of my favorite teachers from college told me a very good way to deal with critics. First go ahead and get mad at them and deal with your immediate emotions. Then after some time, re-read the critiques and really analyze them. If it is personal preference stuff take it with a grain of salt; if meant in all sincerity, consider it; and if they are just being an @ss out of pettiness, ignore them. Best advice I ever got.
Darc
Thank you. I'm usually fairly good with the ones that are useful even if they're opinion based. I still get annoyed, but I'm trying to be better. The ones that are clearly attacks for attacking, I have a hard time with. I'm going to keep a copy of your advice on my desk to help remind me. Thank you!
Stormhawk
Ahh, love the little things you put into this. Such a lovely gift to give someone heading off for a stroll in the Elvin Lands. A nice, wrought iron, crow bar. So handy for so many things.
Darc
Heh, thanks. We couldn't let the poor guy go off completely unarmed. :)
Bear
AS others have said and I have said before THANK YOU to both MAtt and you for all the hard work in creating the comic and website.
Darc
Hey Bear! Thanks for sticking with us through the years. Sorry about the bumpiness of the comic lately. It's been a chaotic year.
Bear
I think thats why they call it real life.
Bear
Comment on Between the Panels. WONDERFUL picture absolutely wonderful. Considering earlier events not something I'd expect to see, with Ruby glomming onto Max, and him being so calm about it.
Darc
Thanks. I'm thinking she's got blackmail on him. Cause that just ain't natural. ;)
Bear
All I can say is while its apparently Ruby's idea, Max doesn't look too upset by it. Maybe he's just being eternally patient
Stephalopod
The Internet is a tough place to give and receive crits, because we project so much of our own moods and selves onto other people's comments. I am not saying you imagined the tone of ridicule, truth is I missed the post in question, but the nature of text can make things even worse.
Stephalopod
When it comes to handling crits, I can say that 4 years of art school toughened me up but even now I have to keep my defensive nature in check, whether at work or on my personal work. If the feedback Is well intentioned, even if it points out the most embarrassing and frustrating of errors, I find it's best to say thank you and to then ask whomever made the comment if they have any examples or resources I can look at to improve.
Stepphalopod
I hope you can work on putting a buffer between emotions and feedback, it's truly a worthy skill and will make your art explode with even more awesome. :)
Darc
Hey Steph. Thanks. I am trying and for the most part I do well. Unfortunately, when it's clearly not a crit but someone being a dick to get their jollies (I doubt going off about "what do you expect from a sh**y artist" is a crit) I get a little annoyed. The first post, which was rude but not a problem, accidentally got deleted along with the inflammatory one. I rarely use to commenting system's back end which leads to mistakes when I do.
Darc
I've been thinking over why I get so many comments along the lines of that and I've realized that most come through dealing with the furry fandom. While a few in the fandom have given crits which have been very helpful, the majority just want to stir the pot.
Darc
While I'm not a prominent person in the furry fandom, I attract enough attention at this point to make a good target. Ugh, annoying. But, sitting down and finally figuring that out helps. Now I need to discover how to unload the annoyance they cause fast enough so I ready for when the next one comes along. Right now I bottle it up until it gets to the point where I can't anymore.
Darc
But I will definitely keep trying to work on creating a buffer. It's a good skill to have an one that I know I'm deficient in. Thanks Steph! :)
Stephalopod
Aaah, I hadn't realized it was a flat out attack, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. It sucks that it comes with the fandom, that's part of the reason I won't join FA. Too many trolls and even people in the fandom who have entitlement issues. Bah.
Darc
I sometimes wonder if many in the fandom genuinely believe that such behavior is a valid critique. *shakes head* The sad thing is, there are so many wonderful people in the furry fandom but the trolls are the more vocal. They've the spare time to blow online, I guess.
HEX the Dark
Unfortunately, that's almost everywhere the case.
Darc
True. So true.
HEX the Dark
Unfortunately, that's almost everywhere the case.
Laurie
The story is engaging and the art is very good. I'm definitely looking forward to the new issue but rereading the previous comics does keep the story fresh in my mind. :)
Darc
Hey Laurie. Thanks. I'll admit, getting back into the grove of working on the comic has been hard - I'm still having trouble doing so. Still, I'm looking forward to the new pages too. :)
John
She can open gates? Anywheres? Holy.... No wonder the fae fear her.
